The time is the 70s, when the city, still formally Bombay, was informally divvied up between a bunch of gangsters. `Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ is the latest homage to the romantic myth of Haji Mastan, the gangster who once upon a time owned the city, and has actors in mainstream films manage a self-assured, under-stated swagger, convey so much silently, sometimes just with their glance and droopy eyes. Ram Gopal Varma’s Company (2002) was supposedly based on the split between Dawood and his second-in-command Chhota Rajan, in the same way this one refers to Haji Mastan and his protégé Dawood’s break-up. . The film presents the rise and reign of Sultan over the city as a glorified Robin Hood figure and his tempestuous relationship with his biggest fan-turned-foe, Shoaib Khan (reference point: Dawood Ibrahim), who joins him as a rookie gangster, only to outplay him and usurp his empire. This becomes the beginning of Mumbai's tryst with ugly crime: gang wars, shoot-outs, bombs, terror and the big bad bhai log as we know them today. After the innovative and experimental Love Sex aur Dhoka, producer Ektaa Kapoor once again scores with a complete entertainer which boasts of almost everything: a compelling story, crisp and absolutely state-of-the-art dialogues (Rajat Arora), an artistic period piece ambience (Aseem Mishra), a lilting music score (Pritam) and some riveting performances. Both Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi breathe fire and brimstone in to their portrayal of the two disparate gangsters and come up with two of the most mesmeric acts of the year, while Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai pitch in as perfect and picturesque molls. Over all a real nice entertaining movie and the costume for the gals were excellent mesmerizing bring back the 70's era prachi looked adorable like a doll and so was kangana ranaut.A must see movie.
